Solomon Kane!

Just finished a book collecting all of Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane stories. Great read. A little bit racist in places. A product of it's times, alas. But still really good. So I went and did this. I photoshopped the title from a comic found online. Now I just need to learn how to color.

  1. Very nice work. What story is it based on, if any? I'm getting a "The Moon of Skulls" vibe, though it could be something like "The Footfalls Within" too.

Well, that's the unfortunate thing about works written 80 years ago: stuff that was pretty daring - a black witch doctor being portrayed as more wise, intelligent and powerful than a white Englishman, for instance - seems run-of-the-mill, while stuff that no-one would bat an eyelid at then would be considered highly offensive nowadays. Funny how things work.

  2. Most likely based on "The Moon of the Skulls" 'cause of the imperiled white woman. Though the taloned hand evokes my favorite Solomon Kane story: "Wings in the Night". I do agree with you about N'Longa being a positive African character in spite of the low-level racism in some of the stories.
