Namor

Back from vacation with about the only sketch I did all week long (I'm a baaa-aad boy). I likes it. Except for that strange bit of shading on his shoulder (completely backwards - should have the lines curving up and around his shoulder muscle) I likes it. It started as an Abe Sapien sketch until I realized I couldn't remember where and what markings Abe had on his face, et voila, Namor the Sub-Mariner! Those bubbles could use some work too.

White Queen

Did this last night. Wanted something new for the blog. I'll be out of town next week so no new stuff till the following week. I will have my sketchbook with me and hopefully there will be new sketches. This is my version of Frank Quitely's version of the White Queen. I'm a big fan of Frank Quitely (not his real name quite frankly). I started by sketching random female figure number eight billion seven hundred thirty-three thousand nine hundred and fifty nine in the series (my favorite subject) and a friend in the same room said it looked like Emma Frost the White Queen. So I went, "hm," found reference for her costume, and went to town. Not too shabby. Better next time.

Mary Shelly Agent of F.R.A.N.K.E.N.S.T.E.I.N.

This is something I'm working on in my brains. I'm a big fan of Mary Shelly's Frankenstein and in Mary Shelly herself. She led a fascinating bohemian life amongst fascinating people and contributed much to the world through her tireless advocacy of her great love Percy Shelly as well as her great work "Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus." I'm ditching most of that and making her into a Georgian era steampunk super spy. Or something. Coming up with what exactly that acronym stands for should be fun. I inked Franky back there almost entirely with a brush pen (Copic) and it came out all right. Also, steampunk Mary has a long neck.

Dashiell Bad Horse

Dash Bad Horse from the amazing comic "Scalped" by Jason Aaron and R.M. Guera finding something shocking just off-screen or something. Or just me projecting as I drew this: "Must-replace-last-post-before-shame-cripples-me-gaaaah". Tried a different approach to the inks. Looser. Drawier. I likes it. And then some black shapes in the back 'cause, you know, easydramaticeffectexclamationpoint! Check out the R.M. Guera site. Master artist. Also, really, "Scalped" is so good it renews my faith in the abilities of mankind. Just look at the works that we can do. Now I cry with smiley face. Also, drawing people with clothes, real clothes, much harder than you'd expect. That's why I like nekkid people. Well, one of the reasons.

Kitty Pryde and Phantom Girl

This in celebration of the March return of Kitty Pryde of the X-Men (exiled in a giant bullet speeding through the cosmos) and the start of a Legion of Superheroes story-line in the Superman books that will lead into their own return. My rendition of Kitty and Phantom Girl bumping brains while phasing through a ridiculous wall. Future wall? Maybe some kind of space toilet? As background space stuff goes I'm no Wally Wood. But then who among us can truly be Wally Wood? On a process note I drew this picture a billion times and this (the best of the batch?) still makes me cringe. Phantom Girl looks like she just stumps along on those meaty upper thighs of hers and look at that extra long wrist holding the back of her head. My God! At least it's done. Again, this blog is to force me to draw and ink and by practice make perfect. Or, practice make more confident. Confidence is key.
